Colposcopy
Colposcopy is a medical procedure that under the large enhancement observes the neck of the uterus and vagina, using a specially designed mobile microscope called colposcope.
If the neck of the uterus (cervix) and the vagina (colpos) are examined – the method is called colposcopy, but if the external genitalia (vulva) is observed, the method is called vulvoscopy.
A doctor (usually a specialist gynecologist) may recommend a colposcopy if certain abnormalities have been found in the PAPA test, and in that sense it represents an extraordinary diagnostic supplement to cytology.
Colposcopy can be used in diagnostics:
Pre-cancerous changes in the cervix epithelium (dysplasia or CIN) and cervical carcinoma,
Genital warts,
Inflammatory changes of the cervix (cervicitis),
Pre-cancerous lesions of the epithelium of the vagina,
Pre-cancerous changes in the external genital area (vulva),
Carcinoma of the vagina and abdominal carcinoma.
In case a gynecologist finds suspicious areas of abnormalities of the mucous membrane (epithelium) during the colposcopy, then a targeted biopsy can be made and a tissue sample is taken for further pathohistological analysis.
